One person is dead after being caught in an avalanche on Boulder Mountain near Revelstoke, B.C., around 3:30 p.m. PT.

RCMP Constable Lesley Smith says the mountain was extremely busy with numerous snowmobilers. She says a group of four snowmobilers from Alberta were near the Boulder Mountain snowmobile cabin when the avalanche struck.

Two of the men were caught in the avalanche and later located by search and rescue crews. A 35-year-old man was found unconscious and died later. A second man survived with non life-threatening injuries.

Smith says all the snowmobilers were equipped with appropriate safety gear including beacons.

The B.C. Coroner's Service was called to the scene and has since taken over the investigation.

Avalanche rating high

The Canadian Avalanche Centre has set the avalanche danger rating at 'high' in most alpine areas of the province as storm fronts bringing heavy precipitation move across the province.

It says the new snow is resting on an unstable snow pack.

Smith says anyone heading into the outdoor alpine needs to be extremely cautious right now.

"We've had a number of avalanches over this winter season and so we are cautioning outdoor enthusiasts to please make sure that they know the environment they're going into and do their research."

This is the second avalanche death in B.C. this year. Last month a snowmobiler died in an avalanche south of Valemount, B.C.

Four years ago, three snowmobilers were killed and 32 were injured after being caught in an avalanche on Boulder Mountain while watching the Big Iron Shootout, an annual snowmobiling event.
