Athlete of the week: Maggie Coles-Lyster, cycling

Next week Coles-Lyster will complete a rare triple when she races in her third world championships this year.

Name: Maggie Coles-Lyster

Age: 17

Hometown: Maple Ridge

Achievements: During the week of October 10, Coles-Lyster will complete a rare triple when she races in the World Junior Road Championships in Doha, Qatar. Earlier in 2016, she competed in the U23 World Cyclocross Championships in Belgium and the World Junior Track Championships in Switzerland. That's three world championships in three different disciplines in one year.

Bronze medalist, 2016 World Junior Track Championships, Omnium.

Five-time gold medalist, 2016 Canadian Junior Canadian Track Championship.

Story: Coles-Lyster started racing novice cyclocross (think cross-country obstacle race) and road races when she was eight, and added track cycling to her repertoire when she was 11-years old.

She explained her reluctance to choose just one discipline in a blog: "I cannot decide which I love the most as they are all so different yet compliment each other so well."

At age 14 Coles-Lyster became the youngest ever to race in the Gastown Grand Prix women's elite division.

Now in Grade 12, she is somehow managing to juggle her last year of high school at Maple Ridge Secondary with the demands of travel, training and competition.

Coles-Lyster says her long range goal is to compete for Canada at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
