Four people are dead and another is in hospital after a car hit black ice and crossed the centre line on B.C.'s Highway 28 on Friday night.

The vehicle was travelling east when it hit the slick patch of road about 25 kilometres from Gold River. Police say it swerved into the wrong lane and hit an oncoming pickup truck.

All four people in the eastbound car were killed. None of them were wearing seatbelts, according to a statement from RCMP.

They have been identified by family member Bruce Mark as:

  • Jamie Jack, 42.
  • Jennifer Andrews, 48.
  • Greg Mark, 37.
  • Joesephine Campbell, 40.

"They're going to be missed ... just trying to let it sink in," Mark said. "To other people: please be careful on the highways."

The group all lived on the Mowachaht Muchalaht First Nation reserve at Gold River.

The truck driver, who was wearing her seatbelt, was taken to Campbell River Hospital to be treated for her injuries.

Sgt. Craig Blanchard with North Vancouver Island Traffic Services said the investigation is ongoing.
