3-storey building too tall, Fort Langley residents say
Fort Langley Residents for Sustainable Development has filed suit in B.C. Supreme Court
Heritage advocates say a three-storey building planned for the heart of Fort Langley will ruin the area’s historical charm.
"Scale it back... get it in proportion and we're happy," said Ted Lightfoot, spokesman for the Langley Heritage Society.
A group called the Fort Langley Residents for Sustainable Development has filed a suit in B.C. Supreme Court, seeking to stop the Coulter Berry building from going up on the corner of Glover Road and Mavis Avenue.
Langley Township has asked for a dismissal, saying council approved the building last November and maintains it acted within its rights.
Kurt Alberts, former mayor of Langley Township, says residents shouldn’t fear the new building, which will feature groundfloor shops, restaurants, underground parking and up to 10 rental suites.
"The building also includes features like a major breezeway through the middle of it. So it tries to speak to the community plan's encouragement of high pedestrian-friendly core area," he said.
The township is expected to be in court in September.
