Two teenagers mixing chemicals in a Langley, B.C., apartment were injured in an explosion that prompted the building's evacuation on Monday afternoon, police said.

Langley RCMP spokesman Peter Thiessen said none of the injuries are life-threatening although one teen may have lost two fingers. "There was a couple of 17-year-old boys mixing a variety of chemicals for unknown reasons," Thiessen told CBC News.

"They sustained some injuries, one may have lost a couple of fingers by the sounds of it."

The chemical explosion happened at around 3:20 p.m. at 20250 56th Ave., Thiessen said.

Langley firefighters, emergency services and RCMP officers were on the scene and the building was quickly evacuated.

Tenants won't be allowed back in until investigators have determined what chemicals had been used, Thiessen said.

Damage to the building appears to be confined to the single suite, police said.
