2 teenage boys arrested in assaults in Surrey park
RCMP have arrested two 15-year-old boys in connection with assaults on two seniors in Bear Creek Park in Surrey, B.C.
Two Indo-Canadian men in their 70s were out for a morning walk on Oct. 10, when they were beaten by a group of five to six white males, police said.
Police continue to investigate and will not release the names of the arrested teens, Sgt. Roger Morrow, a spokesman for the Surrey RCMP, said on Monday.
Morrow said police are recommending the boys be charged with assault with a weapon — a screwdriver.
Police said they believe the motive for the attack was robbery.
Morrow said police were tipped off by a caller and made the arrests on Oct. 12.
TwoIndo-Canadian seniors were brutally beaten in the same parkin July 2005.
Mewa Singh Bains, 83, and Shingara Singh Thandi, 76, were beaten with baseball bats by two teenagers in the public washrooms at Bear Creek Park.
Thandi died of his injuries three weeks later in hospital, while Bains died of a stroke a month after attack.
In that attack, a15-year-old boy was sentenced to three years, while a 17-year-old boy was given six years in prison.
