Interac says its e-Transfer service is back to being "fully operational among all financial institutions" after it was suspended Friday morning while technical issues were being worked out.

The company made that announcement on Twitter early Sunday and stressed on its website that "this was not an attack on our system," and that it took the service offline Thursday night to address "an internal technical issue."

By Friday morning, many people were reporting they weren't able to use the service through several Canadian banks, including Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC, TD Bank and RBC, and were seeing error messages.

Some users took to social media to complain, saying they aren't able to pay their rent without the service.

"The service disruption was caused by a technology issue," Interac spokesperson Colleen Harasymchuk told CBC News in an email.

"At no time was any data at risk."

Interac said it began restoring e-Transfer service shortly before 9 p.m. ET on Saturday, "through all financial institutions on a sequential basis."

Interac had been doing regular social media updates since the service began having technical problems late Thursday.

While offline, the company said any money transfers that were in transit would be secure and would be processed once the system came back online.
