Cami Automotive to cut production, lay off workers at Ont. plant
Slow sales of Cami Automotive's smaller sport utility vehicles will mean rotating layoffs at the company's plant in Ingersoll, Ontario.
A Cami spokesperson told CBC News that 400 workers are being laid off temporarily from the plant.
The Globe and Mail reported earlier Monday that 1,500 workers could be affected for up to a year until the plant starts building a new SUV models.
The newspaper reported that production of the Chevrolet Tracker and the Suzuki Vitara will be cut to 300 vehicles a day from 440 beginning in late March.
Cami Automotive is a joint venture between GM Canada and Suzuki Motor Corp.
Production of a new SUV, the Chevrolet Equinox, is not slated to start until February 2004.
