BlackBerry said it is "extremely disappointed" that the BlackBerry version of the Facebook app will no longer be supported.

Facebook's withdrawal of support for the BlackBerry operating system follows a similar announcement earlier this month from WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook.

Both will continue to support the app on Blackberry's Android-powered Priv handset.

BlackBerry is urging its users to log via the web-based version of Facebook. As of March 31, it will replace the official Facebook app with a new native app that will will direct users to the web version.

"We fought back to work with WhatsApp and Facebook to change their minds, but at this time, their decision stands," Lou Gazzola, who works in developer relations at Blackberry, wrote in a blog post Monday.

"Let them know how you feel on social media, using the hashtag #ILoveBB10Apps," he continued.

WhatsApp ceases its support for the BlackBerry operating system at the end of 2016.
