EP 9: “Minkins the Survivor”
30 mins
Nov. 15, 2023
Upon reaching Montreal in 1851, Shadrach Minkins became a free man. A blackface minstrel show was held in his honour to raise funds and help him settle in his new home. Webster and Cheikh head to Montreal’s Grande Bibliothèque to browse the newspapers of the day and get a sense of how fugitive slaves who got to Canada were perceived. They also meet Frank Mackey, an expert on the Black presence in Montreal, as well as amateur historian and Black Montreal tour guide Rito Joseph, to discuss the period when Minkins lived and worked in the city.
