As the year draws to a close, CBC Books is asking Canadian writers for their favourite titles of 2018. Kyo Maclear is the author of children's books like Bloom and the nonfiction book Birds Art Life and was a juror for the 2018 CBC Nonfiction Prize.

Maclear recommends reading Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot and Floating City by Kerri Sakaomoto.

"Two books that knocked my socks off:

"Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot. Fearless balm and fizzing bomb, I can't think of anything I read this year as gorgeously and radically crafted.

"Floating City by Kerri Sakamoto. Historical fiction that transcends the genre, brimming with magical detail and powered by floating flower gardens, the real-life visions of Bucky Fuller, and Frankie Hanesaka's hearty but heartless dream chasing. Just amazing."
