As the year draws to a close, CBC Books is asking Canadian writers to share their favourite books of 2018Harley Rustad is Toronto-based author, journalist and editor. His nonfiction book Big Lonely Doug, started out as a magazine article about Canada's second largest Douglas-fir tree and one logger's effort to preserve it.

Rustad recommends reading Lands of Lost Borders by Kate Harris.

"Lands of Lost Borders by Kate Harris. Deftly imagined and sublimely told, Kate Harris's debut memoir set cycling the Silk Road probes notions of the modern-day explorer who confronts borders and wonders where limits truly lie — in facing the lines on a map or the walls inside us all. Sensitive, profound, and observant, I implore anyone to read this book and refrain from underlining the innumerable, glimmering gems of prose."
