'We belong here.' Zarqa Nawaz on her family connection to a Canadian landmark
When Zarqa Nawaz's father came to Canada in the 1970s, he became part of a Canadian feat of innovation. He helped lay the literal foundation for the CN Tower, the Canadian landmark that was once our calling card to the world.
"It almost seems un-Canadian to show off about it, about how great we were at the time," Nawaz, a journalist and broadcaster says. "But we had bragging rights to talk about this tower. And it was such an important part of my childhood."
Our blood is in the soil of this country.
The tower was not only important to Canada's collective identity but to Nawaz's personal connection to Canada as well.
"As a child of immigrants, to be able to say we were part of the building of this country is an important thing to say. It matters to us and our blood is in the soil of this country."
