Our favourite detective is back! Take a sneak peek at what happens on the 18th season of Murdoch Mysteries
How to watch everyone’s favourite turn-of-the-century crime series now back for its 18th season on CBC
CBC's most-watched and longest-running drama, Murdoch Mysteries is back for Season 18 with 22 new episodes.
Set in the turn of the nineteenth century and based on Maureen Jennings' 1997 novel Except the Dying, Detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) returns to solve some of Toronto's most perplexing murders.
Is anyone new joining the cast for Season 18 of Murdoch Mysteries?
Award-winning Canadian actor Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Kim's Convenience, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Mandalorian) joins the cast as Inspector Choi, a highly-regarded Korean police officer and jovial leader whose spine of steel brings a new perspective to Station House #4.
"A lot of Kimbits are Murdochians," says Sun-Hyung Lee about his latest role, "so it is an institution in this country."
What's new for Season 18?
As the season begins, Detective Murdoch finds himself a bachelor after his wife Doctor Ogden takes a posting at a new hospital in London, bringing their daughter Susannah along. He rents out their family home and moves into a rooming house where the previous tenant was rumoured to have been murdered.
At the station house, tensions between Higgins-Newsome and Constable Tucker escalate. Given Tucker's continued fraternizing with gangster Tony Petrucci after killing a prisoner during a transfer to the penitentiary last season, it seems like the copper is involved with a criminal syndicate.
Violet Hart, both coroner and proprietor of the thriving Starbright Lounge, may have found happiness when her suitor Isaiah Buchanan pushes for more. Effie Newsome-Crabtree has a new job as a Crown Attorney but during her first trial, evidence mysteriously disappears and Effie's competence is called into question.
Meanwhile, Ruth Higgins-Newsome is shirking her duties as a mother to become the star of The Adventures of Agnes, a popular serialized moving picture that attracts ardent — and some unhinged — fans who threaten her life.
Crabtree and Effie attend an event for Charles Dickens' afficionados, only to wind up sleuthing after their host is found dead. Other investigations include the drug overdose of a new tenant of Toronto's first low-cost housing terrace, which was a controversial undertaking. Murdoch and Choi try to intercept a spirited trouble-seeking drunk on Christmas Eve before his foes do.
And in the milestone 300th episode Detective Murdoch visits the UK to see his wife as they celebrate their wedding anniversary.
What guest stars are appearing in Season 18?
Guest stars include Rebecca Liddiard (Fargo, Frankie Drake Mysteries), Daniel Kash (Slasher, Law & Order: Criminal Intent Toronto) and popular TV host and gossip-columnist Lainey Lui. Other episodes also feature Peter Keleghan as government spy Terrence Meyers, known for showing up at crime scenes at inopportune moments.
The Starlight Lounge will feature musical guests including alternative pop singer Adaline, plus TikTok sensation and American Idol contender Nicolina.
