Canada's Janyk 5th in men's slalom

Michael Janyk of Whistler, B.C., was fifth Sunday in the men's World Cup slalom race in Adelboden, Switzerland.

Janyk, who won bronze in the slalom at the 2009 world championships, has endured a frustrating start in the discipline in this season's World Cup races. He was ninth after the first run at Val D'Isere, France, last month, but hit a gate as visibility was a challenge in the second run.

He failed to qualify for the second run earlier this week in Zagreb, Croatia, miscalculating by switching skis.

"I went out to attack," said Janyk. "I’ve built my career on attacking and fighting and that’s what I wanted to come back to."

Janyk's sister Britt finished ninth in her super-G race Sunday in Austria.

The order of the top two did not change from first to second run, with Ivica Kostelic of Croatia winning ahead of Marcel Kirscher of Austria.

Janyk was fifth after the first run, but saw Austrians Reinfried Herbst and Mario Matt overtake him on the final leaderboard. Andre Myhrer of Sweden and Manfred Pranger of Austria were in contention for a podium spot after the first run, but fell well back, which permitted Janyk to hold on to fifth spot.

"The second run was a total battle," said Janyk. "I fought the whole way — nothing came easy."

Calgary's Brad Spence and Trevor White finished 17th and 20th, respectively.

Sasha Zaitsoff of Nelson, B.C., made his World Cup debut, with the 20-year-old not qualifying for the second run.

"The conditions were pretty challenging but I think I skied pretty well. I just tried to take it all in – it was a big thrill."

Patrick Biggs of Orleans, Ont., and Julian Cousineau of Lachute, Que., did not finish the first run and Paul Stutz of Banff, Alta., straddled a gate during the first run.

Kostelic's victory was his 13th in World Cup events and 10th in slalom.

The Olympic silver medallist leads the overall World Cup standings with 504 points. Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway has 435 points, 14 head of Silvan Zurbriggen of Austria.

Zurbriggen was 10th Sunday, while Svindal did not compete after finishing in a tie for first on Saturday in the giant slalom.

Kostelic holds a 49-point lead in the discipline standings over Myhrer, who won in Zagreb.

Americans Ted Ligety and Bode Miller both skied out in the first run.

The men's circuit moves to Wengen, Switzerland, for three races beginning on Friday.
