Canada's Humphries takes bobsleigh silver

Canadian pilot Kaillie Humphries and brakewoman Emily Baadsvik captured a silver medal in a women's World Cup bobsleigh race Friday in Koenigssee, Germany.

Humphries and Baadsvik shared second place with Switzerland's Fabienne Meyer and Hanne Schenk after the two sleds finished with identical times of one minute, 44.10 seconds over two runs.

"Training went well all week and I like this track a lot so was happy to be back and get on the podium," said Humphries, who was third in Konigssee at the 2011 world championships. "I like the way it feels and the feeling I get in my hands. I think I’ve figured out how to drive here and it just seems to work for me."

World Cup leaders Cathleen Martini and Berit Wiacker won the race in 1:43.56 – more than a half second better than the runners up.

2006 Olympic champion Sandra Kiriasis and Lisette Thoene, also of Germany, took the bronze in 1:44.16.

Humphries, from Calgary, won gold at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics with brakewoman Heather Moyse, who's now retired from the sport.

Humphries and Baadsvik sit eighth in the World Cup standings through five of eight races. They won a gold medal together for the first time last month in La Plagne, France.

Friday's second-place result came one week after the Canadian bobsleigh team pulled out of the World Cup races in Altenberg, Germany after a serious crash by the four-man sled piloted by Chris Spring.

"We were definitely motivated and happy to be racing again after an emotional week, and just wanted to be strong for the boys on Team Spring," said Humphries.

"I think we proved Canada can be down and out one week, but bounce back and be on top the next, and that is something we should be proud of as a whole team."
