New Yorker cartoonist Emily Flake joins guest host Piya Chattopadhyay to discuss Mama Tried: Dispatches from the Seamy Underbelly of Modern Parenting. Flake's new collection offers real talk on the discomfort of early parenthood, the ridiculous things pregnant bodies do, and the ambivalence many new mothers feel.
Flake, who mistook her own labour for "serious gas", offers a wry take on what to expect when you're expecting. She says mommy culture, "a world that takes itself so seriously", is ripe for satire.
"There's things that suck about being alive, period. So why wouldn't there be things that suck about being a mom?" she laughs.
