Canadian director Paul Haggis, known for acclaimed films like Crash, has never been one to shy away from sensitive topics — and he's back at it again with Show Me A Hero, a new HBO miniseries created by The Wire's David Simon.

The show follows racial tensions in Yonkers, NY as the predominantly white, middle-class neighbourhood grapples with federally-mandated desegregated public housing in the 1980s and 90s.

For Haggis, this story is about much more than one neighbourhood in one moment in time — it's about a history of racism that is "part of the fabric" of America. And approaching this topic as a white person is a responsibility he takes very seriously.

HBO's "Show Me A Hero" deals with racial tensions in the 1980s, but director Paul Haggis doesn't think much has changed since then. (Eleanor Knowles/Fabiola Carletti/CBC)
