When the teen was recovering in the hospital, Canadian Paralympian and activist Rick Hansen came to visit him.
The two discovered they had a lot in common, so the friendship continued along with Trent's recovery.
Two years later, they're still close, and Rick has played a big role in Trent's future career path.
