Growing the Middle Class (and also the deficit but NBD)
The Liberal government unveiled its budget this week, and we started off our quiz by asking the panellists if they could identify the needlessly redacted word from this clip. What is Finance Minister Bill Morneau saying he wants to do to the economy?
The answer is "grow." (you pervert!)
When Morneau spoke to CBC's Anna Maria Tremonti this week, in the span of 40 seconds, he used the phrase "grow the economy" four times. Maybe he should try to grow his vocabulary.
While the deficit is quite a bit larger than promised, panellist Ashley Botting favours the "give them a chance" approach.
Tom Howell gave the Liberals even more rope by considering all of the costly decisions Canada hasn't made, like joining the Iraq War, or deregulating our banks into casinos. So shouldn't we feel okay spending that money we "saved?" And by that logic, shouldn't we treat ourselves to a nice steak dinner tonight with all the money we "saved" by not having a cigarette addiction?
This year, the budget had a title: "Growing the Middle Class." For our panellists, it brought to mind everything from a teen romance novel to a petri dish, but they could all agree on one thing: it's boring. Send us your suggestions by tweeting #BetterBudgetTitle.
