Winery owners say the B.C. government's relaxation of grape imports and taxes allowed the industry to focus on winemaking skill, not valley soil. But the tax breaks expire, and import restrictions will be reimposed in the new year, and owners say while a massive replanting is underway, it will take at least three years for new vines to grow.
