Veronica Mars creator behind possible 90210 spinoff
The popular 1990s TV series Beverly Hills 90210 — the numbers refer to the wealthy enclave's zip code — may be getting a spinoff.
The CW network is said to be developing a contemporary spinoff of Aaron Spelling's teen soap, which starred Canada's Jason Priestly and Shannen Doherty as Minnesota teens who move into L.A.'s richest community.
Trade paper Hollywood Reporter says Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas is in talks about the project. Details remain vague.
What is known is that the new series will be produced by CBS Paramount's TV division, which took over ownership of the original series two years ago.
If green-lighted by CW executives, this would be 90210's second spinoff. Melrose Place, which focused on a group of 20-somethings living in a hip part of L.A., had a successful seven-year run on Fox.
Beverly Hills, 90210, which aired on Fox from 1990-2000, made mega-stars out of Priestley, Doherty and their co-stars: Jenni Garth, Luke Perry, Ian Ziering and Tori Spelling.
CW is the network behind the freshman drama Gossip Girl, which revolves around privileged teens living in Manhattan.
CW chief Dawn Ostroff has said she's hoping to do another project with Thomas, whose highly acclaimed teen sleuth series, Veronica Mars, was shown the door after three seasons.
