Nuno Ricardo is this year's winner of the annual Harrow Fair people crowing contest.

Ricardo, who said he helped judge the contest last year, took home the plaque and the $15 cash award with a crow deceptively similar to that of a real rooster.

"This is going behind my desk so everyone I work with can see it," Ricardo said of the plaque.

The event, sponsored by the Colchester South & Harrow Agricultural Society, is one of the highlights of the yearly agricultural exhibition, which also features carnival rides, livestock exhibits and arts and crafts showcases.

The people crowing competition immediately followed this year's rooster crowing competition.

This Labour Day weekend, local roosters will be put to the test in the Harrow Fair's annual rooster crowing competition. But if you were feeling left out and wanted to get in on the action, you can enter the fair's "people-crowing" contest. The CBC's Jennifer La Grassa gave it her best shot, speaking with Luke Korcok, a member of the fair's poultry committee and Chris Ortner, one of contest's judges, about their best tips for an award-winning crow.

Ricardo had never competed in it before, and the decision to enter was a spontaneous one, he said.

He did not prepare for the contest and did not expect to win.

"It feels amazing!" he said enthusiastically.

"I never thought I'd do anything like this."

Asked what advice he'd give to others contemplating a run at the $15 purse, Ricardo replied, "Just go for it and have a good time. Like honestly, what's the worst that can happen?"
