Man found dead after Windsor standoff connected to Amherstburg shooting

Police say the 31-year-old Amherstburg man was taken to hospital in Detroit with life-threatening injuries, but his condition is now stable.

Special Investigations Unit has assigned five investigators and designated 11 witness officers

The province's civilian police watchdog is investigating a Friday afternoon standoff on Betts Avenue in Windsor that ended with police discovering a dead man in the garage.

Windsor police have confirmed their tactical response was connected to an early-morning shooting in Amherstburg. 

Heavily armed officers surrounded the house on Windsor's west side, where police officers urged a man inside to come out with his hands in the air. Amherstburg police officers were also on scene. 

The standoff ended about 2 p.m. when the body of a 34-year-old man was found inside the garage. 

The Special Investigations Unit said a post mortem is scheduled for Saturday morning in London.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

Eleven witness officers have been designated — eight from Windsor police, three from Amherstburg police and one from the OPP.

Amherstburg police officers responded to a shooting in the 100 block of Sandwich Street North shortly before 2:30 a.m. Friday.

A 31-year-old Amherstburg man had been shot in the chest. He was transferred to a Detroit hospital, where he is now listed in stable condition.

Police closed Sandwich Street between Texas Road and St. Arnaud Street.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
