Man charged after 75-year-old woman assaulted near the Ganatchio Trail
The victim was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries
A 21-year-old Windsor man has been charged with aggravated assault after a 75-year-old woman was found unconscious near the Ganatchio Trail in the city's east end.
"Investigators believe that this is an unprovoked, random attack," said Sgt. Steve Betteridge, public information officer with the Windsor police service. "The victim remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries."
Emergency response officials were called to the scene on Sunday at 8:00 a.m. after they received a call about a person being assaulted.
The victim was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
"This is a rare isolated incident. It's a vicious attack," said Betteridge. "That is something that is extremely rare in our city which is a good thing."
Betteridge said that the Ganatchio Trail area is a "safe area" and he hopes members of the community will continue to enjoy using it.
"I think it's awful. I can't believe that would actually happen, especially here," said Terri Miller who walks the trail regularly. "It probably would help to have a few safety islands or whatever it is that they could use to call for help or even for somebody having a medical emergency as well."
Detectives from the Major Crimes Branch are investigating the incident.
Investigators do not believe there are any other suspects at this time.
