A man has died after being found with a gunshot wound in front of the former Water World building near downtown Windsor Monday, according to police.

Windsor police said that officers responded to a call after 7 a.m. for "unknown trouble."

After arriving at the building, which is located near the Wyandotte Street East and Glengarry Avenue intersection, police say they found the injured man.

Emergency services performed first aid and brought the man to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The major crimes unit continues to investigate the homicide, and the scene remains cordoned off by yellow police caution tape. What appears to be bullet casings could be seen on the ground behind the closed off section.

A Windsor police forensic identification unit was also on scene.

After the patient was transferred to Windsor Regional Hospital's Ouellette campus, a partial lockdown was initiated at both hospital locations, according to spokesperson Steve Erwin.

In an email, Erwin said that this "is a precautionary measure instituted to check IDs [identifications] of those entering our campuses until we have further information from police."

Erwin continued to say that this is a "routine safeguard" to protect staff, patients and visitors when there's an ongoing investigation that involves a patient.

Around 2:30 p.m., Erwin said the partial lockdowns would be lifted soon.

Bianca Jackson with police says the investigation is in its "infancy stage."

"We do not have much information to share," she said.

In an email, City of Windsor spokesperson Michael Janisse wouldn't give any further details about the case and directed CBC News to police.

Police are asking that residents and business owners in the area get in touch if they have any information that would help the investigation and review any surveillance video.

Police did not say in the release whether they have arrested a suspect.

The Homelessness and Housing Help Hub (H4) service, which operates out of the building, appears to still be open to the public.

Joey Drouillard, who lives in a nearby apartment building, told CBC News that he heard loud bangs early Monday morning while sitting on his couch. At first, he thought they were fireworks, but then saw the police vehicles.

"I did worry a little bit," he said.

"I worry about the kids living in my building and the kids in the neighbourhood too."

Drouillard says his apartment faces the park in front of H4, which is where the incident has taken place.
