Victims' rights advocate Nippard dies of cancer
Nellie Nippard, the Newfoundland woman credited with raising the profile of victims' rights after being stabbed 33 times by her husband, has died of cancer.
Nippard died Friday after a 10-year battle with the disease. She was 54. Llewellyn Nippard stabbed her in the face, stomach and back in July 1990. He left her for dead at their home in Lewisporte.
He was sentenced to life in prison for the attempted murder of Nellie, but was eligible for parole after seven years.

She said she lived in constant fear of his release and spent the next decade fighting for the rights of victims.
She was instrumental in convincing Ottawa to let victims attend parole hearings and read statements. At the time of her death, she was trying to convince Ottawa to provide funding for victims to go to parole hearings.
Nippard also fought for changes in how police respond to victims of stalking.
Her funeral will take place Tuesday in Birchy Bay.
Llewellyn Nippard is still in jail after he was denied parole in 2001.
