The city is opening five warming centres at 5 p.m. Friday with frigid temperatures forecast for the GTA well into next week.

The facilities open when temperatures are set to fall to -5 C or below. Environment Canada says Toronto will hit that mark this evening, with windchill values approaching -13 overnight.

The warming centres can be found at:

  • 136 Spadina Rd. (south of Dupont Street).

  • 81 Elizabeth St. (West of Bay Street, south of Dundas Street W.).

  • 12 Holmes Ave. (Off of Yonge Street, south of Finch Avenue. E.).

  • 885 Scarborough Golf Club Rd. (East of Markham Road, south of Ellesmere Road).

  • Metro Hall, 55 John St. (North of Wellington Street W.).

Walk-ins are welcome, and if a warming centre is full, the city says it will arrange for transportation to another location.

The cold is expected to stick around until late next week, Environment Canada says, with daytime highs around -5 C and overnight lows well into the mid-teens through to at least Thursday.
