Sunrise Propane site for sale
The site of the Sunrise Propane explosion is up for sale.
The 2.8 acres at 62 Murray Road, near Keele Street and Wilson Avenue, is listed at $2.2 million.
Residents of the north Toronto neighbourhood say they hope the real estate goes for housing projects and not for another industrial complex.
Lisa Ciffolillo, whose nearby home suffered serious damage in the August 2008 explosion, says she'd be happy with "pretty much anything that isn't dangerous. Anything that is normal is fine with me."
Right now the site is zoned industrial but it could be rezoned for residential — boosting the value of the land.
Local city councillor Maria Augimeri says the owners will probably "wait and get it rezoned, then sell."
Augimeri says the land can't be rezoned until next year, the next time the province will allow zoning reviews.
She says residents shouldn't worry. "If we're successful in rezoning it — and I think we will be — then probably some housing will end up there in the future."
Tony DiSanto, who heads the local ratepayers group, says he's organized a meeting to let residents air their concerns about the site.
"Do they want residential? Do they want commercial? Do they want mixed? Do they want a senior citizen's home?"
The meeting will be held at St. Norbert’s Church on Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
