Ontario's police watchdog says it is looking into the circumstances of the death of a 55-year-old man who was fatally pinned under a TTC bus this week.

In a news release on Thursday, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Toronto police officers encountered a man who was behaving in a strange manner at Ossington subway station, near Ossington Avenue and Bloor Street West, on Tuesday evening.

The SIU said the officers spoke with the man and then left the area. Shortly afterwards, the man left the station and fell onto the road outside. He was pinned under a TTC bus, taken to hospital and later pronounced dead.

Police have said the man was struck shortly before 8:25 p.m. Tuesday, when the bus was turning right to go south on Ossington Avenue.

On Wednesday, police appealed to the public for help in identifying the man.

A post-mortem exam was completed on Thursday, the SIU said.

The SIU has assigned two investigators and one forensic investigator to the case.

The SIU, an independent government agency, investigates the conduct of police that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
