Woman shot in targeted incident outside Markham home by suspect in construction vest, police say
Police believe man disguised himself to trick woman into coming outside
Police are searching for a man after a woman was shot outside her Markham home in what's believed to be a targeted incident.
Investigators believe the man disguised himself as a construction worker to trick the woman into going outside, where he could ambush her, according to Const. James Dickson, spokesperson for York Regional Police.
Police have released video of the shooting, which happened in the area of Lee Avenue and Noble Street on Tuesday at about 5:30 p.m.
Dickson said 41-year-old woman went outside the home to talk to the man and spoke to him at length. As she began to leave, the man pulled out a handgun and fired at her several times, he said.
Police say the suspect was not known to the woman.
The woman suffered a single gunshot wound and has been released from hospital, police say.
According to police, the man came to the home alone in a dark-coloured, Audi A4 sedan and fled in the same vehicle. He was last seen on Lee Avenue eastbound toward Noble Street.
The man is described as tall with a skinny build. He was wearing a construction vest, a construction helmet, a dark-coloured hooded sweater, black pants and a medical mask.
Police say daylight shooting is 'concerning incident'
Dickson said the shooting, which happened in daylight hours, is disturbing.
"It's quite a concerning incident, particularly when this is in a residential intersection at 5:30 in the evening," Dickson said.
Dickson added "there's no indication" the incident was meant to be a home invasion, noting the suspect did not attempt to enter the home or demand money.
Several cars drove by at the time and police are urging anyone with any information, including security camera or dashboard camera video, to come forward to police.
