Peel police say they have taken a suspect into custody following a Friday morning shooting in Mississauga.

The shooting happened at about 10 a.m. after an altercation between two neighbours in the area of Beacon Lane and Perivale Road, acting Sgt. Sarah Patten told reporters at the scene on Friday.

The suspect was inside a residence on Beacon Lane after the shooting, Patten said.

At 10:15 p.m. Friday, Patten said police had arrested the man following hours of negotiation.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was taken to a trauma centre with critical injuries, but is now in stable condition, Patten said.

A local elementary school, St. David of Wales Separate School, had been placed under hold-and-secure as a precaution, Patten said. It was lifted at 3:15 p.m.

Police had a large presence in the area throughout the day,
