Person found dead after fire in historic building in Bowmanville, police say
Emergency services said 1 person was unaccounted for following the blaze last week
A person has been found dead inside a historic building in downtown Bowmanville where a major fire happened last week, according to Durham Regional Police.
In a news release on Monday, police said the Ontario Fire Marshal found the person following the blaze that broke out last Thursday on King Street W.
Investigators are still trying to identify the person. Initially, after the fire was put out, Clarington Fire said one person was unaccounted for. Clarington firefighters were called to the address at about midnight on March 6.
Twenty-four people were evacuated from their homes due to the fire.
According to Clarington Fire, the building where the fire occurred is at least a century old and has businesses at street level and residential units on the second and third stories.
Police said the Ontario Fire Marshal's office is still investigating the cause of the fire.
"Our thoughts and prayers remain with those impacted by this tragedy," police said in the release.
