A float plane with two occupants crashed in the Red Lake area Thursday evening after leaving for a northern tourist camp.

Provincial police report the plane took off from the Red Lake waterway about 5:30 p.m, but the plane was spotted shortly after, as it crashed into Red Lake, in an area known as Bruce Channel, about 200 metres from shore.

It's believed a man and woman from the United States were on board.

The Red Lake OPP marine unit and civilian boats have been searching the crash scene and the police’s underwater search and recovery unit is expected to take part in the search Friday.

The Transportion Safety Board and the OPP are investigating.
