Some rural schools closed and buses cancelled after overnight snowfall in northwestern Ontario

Significant snowfall and blowing snow have created dangerous conditions in the region. Here's the latest information you need to know about bus service and school closures across northwestern Ontario.

Rural schools are closed Monday in Thunder Bay, Ont., and some school bus routes are cancelled after a dump of snow overnight in the region.

Most school buses are cancelled in outside communities surrounding Thunder Bay. 

Environment Canada has issued multiple weather warnings for the region, including snowfall and winter storm warnings. Significant snowfall is expected to continue through the day, with total accumulations of 15 to 20 centimetres. 

School closures 

  • Lakehead Public Schools is closing rural schools today due to weather conditions. That includes Crestview, Five Mile, Gorham Ware, McKenzie, Nor'wester View, Kakabeka, Valley Central, and Whitefish Valley schools. 
  • Public board city schools are open in Thunder Bay. As well, the Thunder Bay Catholic Board, French Catholic, and French public schools are open in Thunder Bay, and city school buses are running.
  • In the west, Sioux Narrows Public School is closed today. All other Keewatin Patricia District School Board (KPDSB) schools are open. More information can be found on the KPDSB website.
  • Mine Centre Public School and Nestor Falls School are closed today. More information can be found on the Rainy River District School Board website.

School bus route cancellations in Thunder Bay

  • Student Transportation Services of Thunder Bay has cancelled all rural school buses for the day. Most student transportation for city schools will run, but delays are possible.
  • All wheelchair accessible vehicles are cancelled for the day for the Thunder Bay Catholic, French Catholic and French public school boards. More information can be found on the Student Transportation Services of Thunder Bay website.
  • All student transportation has been cancelled for the day in White River. More information can be found on the Algoma and Huron-Superior Transportation Services website.

Regional school bus route cancellations

  • All buses in Kenora, Sioux Narrows, Red Lake, Ear Falls, Vermilion Bay, Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Ignace, and Upsala will be cancelled on Monday due to inclement weather and road conditions. More information can be found on the Northwestern Ontario Student Services Consortium website.
  • In the Superior Greenstone District Area, 36 bus routes are cancelled. More information can be found on the Superior Greenstone District School Board website.

  • A number of bus cancellations are being reported in Atikokan, along with student transportation in surrounding First Nations. More information can be found on the Rainy River District Transportation Services Consortium website.
