The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has ended flood warnings for the Township of O'Connor and the Township of Gillies, south of Thunder Bay.

The Authority said the Whitefish River crested overnight and will continue to slowly recede during the day, however flows will remain high for some time.

The warnings were issued Monday around 8 p.m after 123 millimetres of rain was recorded in the Whitefish River Gauge in the previous 12 hours.

People are still being advised to use extreme caution travelling in the Whitefish River area, as many roads were damaged and could still be unpassable.

The village of Hymers south of Thunder Bay was one area affected by Monday's flooding.

The high waters have led to washouts and road closures in the Nolalu area according to Ontario Provincial Police. Police are asking people to avoid the following routes and areas.

  • Highway 593 closed south of Highway 588
  • Highway 588 closed in both directions at Leeper Road
  • Highway 595 closed at Marks Road
  • Old Mill Road
  • Old School Road
  • Mercantile Lane
  • Whitefish River Bridge (water level very high)
  • Logan Road Washout
