2 rescued after sailboat capsizes on Lake Superior
Two people were rescued over the weekend after a sailboat capsized on the north shore of Lake Superior.
The OPP Marathon detachment received a distress call at around 3:50 p.m. Sunday from the east end of Peninsula Harbour.
The caller said he and a passenger were sitting on the hull of the overturned boat wearing personal flotation devices, but strong offshore winds were causing the boat to continue to drift out into Lake Superior.
Local resident Doug Bruce launched his own sailboat to help with the rescue, along with Keith McCuaig of Marathon and the OPP.
Police said Bruce took the pair on board and transferred them to an OPP vessel which took them to shore. McCuaig retrieved the overturned boat and took it to a docking area.
The two people from the boat were treated for cold exposure and later released from hospital.
