A Sudbury teen who wrote and self-published a novel last year is getting ready to work on her second book.

Hannah Watson, 13, wrote a novel last year as part of National Novel Writing Month, after her teacher showed her information online about the program.

Writers sign up, set a word count goal and start writing during the month of November, she said.

She said found out about it in the middle of last November, but that didn’t stop her from moving forward with her writing.

“I had two weeks to reach my word count goal which I set at 10,000 words,” she said.

“It was difficult because of course, I still had to do school work and all kinds other extracurricular activities.”

She made a point to write every night and achieved her goal.

“On that last day, it was incredible just to think that I had written a 10,000 word novel,” she said.

Her novel, called ‘The Raven Haired Girl’ is a fantasy story that features avians — half bird, half human creatures.

“I’ve always loved birds,” she said.

“I think they’re beautiful and I’ve considered being an ornithologist when I grow up.”

The book is self-published and is also available through Amazon.

Watson said she uses ‘any free moment’ to pursue her passion of writing, and now that National Novel Writing Month is back, she is getting ready to start her second book.

“I’ve always loved words,” she said.

“I think it’s amazing just to be able to … use words to show a picture to somebody else. I think stories are amazing.”

Watson spoke with CBC Radio Up North host, Jason Turnbull.
