City councillors in Sudbury will look over a report next week that has chosen a site for the new arena and event centre in the city's downtown.

As expected, the new facility is proposed for a parcel of land across from the existing arena, an area where the city has been buying up buildings and demolishing them.

The report says the chosen site — which borders Brady, Minto, Shaughnessy and Van Horne Streets — avoids the need for road realignments and major utility relocations.

Additionally, the report says there are opportunities for redevelopment on three sides and allows for added facilities such as a hotel or a conference centre.

The report says the location could also lead to better use of public spaces, such as Memorial Park and for programming during large events.

The recommendation is also designed to keep the Sudbury Theatre Centre and the Downtown Rail Station where they are.

Last April, city council gave the green light to spend $200 million on the new facility.
