A quilters group in Sault Ste. Marie, called the Stitches from the Heart Quilt Guild, is close to donating its 2,000th quilt to people in need.  It's through a long-running program called Comfort Quilt.

Guild president, Donna St. Jules, said members make quilts for new residents at the Extendicare Maple View long-term care home in Sault Ste. Marie.

"They absolutely love receiving these quilts," St. Jules said.

"It's wonderful for them because they get a quilt at a time in their life when they're feeling very vulnerable, when they're feeling very scared, and the quilt gives them the comfort that they need and they know that they're not alone."

St. Jules said she's been quilting for about six years.

"I love sewing quilts for other people because as I'm sewing the quilts, I'm thinking about the person that I'm sewing it for," she said.

"And I truly believe that I'm transferring all of that love from my heart through my hands into the fabric."

St. Jules said the guild also sews quilts for an organization called the Twinkie Foundation, which supports children from the community who need to travel to southern Ontario for medical care.

She said she's glad the guild will soon reach the 2,000-quilt milestone.

"It's quite a milestone," she said. "We know that we've touched at least 2,000 people through this very generous program."
