Schoemperlen wins G.G. Award for fiction
Diane Schoemperlen, author of Forms of Devotion, has won the 1998 Governor-General's Literary Award for fiction. Schoemperlen is from Kingston, Ontario.
The Governor-General's Award jury described her collection of short stories as" witty" and "brilliant." It is the second major literary award in Canada this year for a collection of short stories. Alice Munro won the Giller Prize early this month for her collection, titled The Love of a Good Woman.
The French-language fiction prize went to Christiane Frenette of Levis, Quebec for La Terre ferme, on how a town copes with loss and mourning. In the non-fiction, David Adams Richards won for Lines on the Water -- A Fisherman's Life on the Miramichi.
Stephanie Bolster of Vanier, Ontario and Suzanne Jacob of Outremont, Quebec won for poetry.
Each award is worth $10,000.
