Two people are in hospital after a single-vehicle collision on the Broadway Bridge this morning.

Police saw what they called a "suspicious vehicle" around 1:40 a.m. CST this morning around 17th St. W and Avenue N S. Police found that the owner of the vehicle had outstanding criminal code warrants and tried to do a traffic stop.

The vehicle fled toward downtown, then onto the Broadway Bridge. Police tried to deploy stop sticks, but the white four-door hit a heavy light standard near the top of the bridge and left a trail of debris.

Only one car was involved. A half-dozen police SUVs and trucks were spread along the length of the bridge.

The occupants of the vehicle, ages 26 and 33, were transported to hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries.

The westbound lanes of Broadway Bridge have opened but eastbound lanes are still restricted, as crews remain on scene. The bridge is expected to be fully open by 9:30 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing.

Corrections

  • A previous version of this story said the vehicle was headed toward downtown on the Broadway Bridge. In fact, police said it went toward downtown from the west, then continued onto the Broadway Bridge.
