Saskatoon improv group presents 'alternative facts' on Canadian history
Saskatoon Soaps to riff on Canadian Heritage Minutes at anniversary show Friday
If the smell of burning toast gives you fond memories of a classic Canadian television segment, you might enjoy tonight's show by the Saskatoon Soaps.
The Saskatoon Soaps improv group plans to have some fun with Canadian Heritage Minutes, the 60-second morsels of history that once were a staple on the country's airwaves.
The show is a celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary of Confederation.
The group got the idea for the show when the Minutes started appearing on-screen ahead of the anniversary.
'Nostalgia for nostalgia'
"It was an onslaught of all of them being pumped out onto the airwaves again and it was this great [feeling] of nostalgia that just swept over me," said Rob van Meenen from the Soaps.
"So it was nostalgia for nostalgia."
Van Meenen said the range of quality in the much-loved segments was "ripe for comedic riffing."
Courtney Lato, who is also from the Soaps, said the group will work with the audience to choose their favourite Minutes.
"We'll start with real Minutes and then we will present them with, I believe the term is, 'alternative facts.'"
The show starts at 9:30 p.m. CST today at the Broadway Theatre in Saskatoon.
