Students from across Saskatoon gather to celebrate culture

Drumming, dancing and plenty of water was the order of business at Mount Royal Collegiate's annual Powwow and Festival of Nations held on Tuesday.

The event, now in its 15th year, brings elementary and high school students from across Saskatoon to Mount Royal's football field to celebrate not only First Nations, Inuit and Metis culture, but cultural diversity in general.

More than 1500 students watched and participated in events throughout the day as temperatures approached 30 C.

Shannon Peters is the Community School Coordinator at Mount Royal Collegiate and helped plan the event. She said the students love the cultural celebration.

"They say it's the best day ever because for our kids, to see so many people in colourful regalia representing their culture, it really is a day of belonging."
