Clock ticking on Saskatoon's Farnam Block
Demolition of iconic building expected soon
It looks like the Farnam Block is in its final days.
Construction crews have set up fencing around the building, and workers have been busy inside preparing it for demolition.
The building's new owners bought the property in December. They had originally considered renovating, but decided the numerous foundation repairs would be too expensive.
A group of local investors attempted a last ditch effort to buy the property and preserve it, but it didn't work out.
"You don't just want to save heritage buildings for the sake of saving them," said Sterling Summach. "But we feel that if there is a chance and you can breathe new life into something, and we've done that before, and that's always a good thing."
Summach says he can understand why the Farnam Block's new owners have chosen to demolish, but admits to being disappointed the building couldn't be saved.
"We're not a very big city, we're not very old, and it's important to remember where we came from," he said. "I know that sounds cliche, but once these buildings are gone, we don't have anything."
