'Wolfcop' wins movie-making money

Wolfcop, a movie about a police officer — with a twist — has been green-lighted to go into production after winning $1 million in a contest called Cinecoup.

That's right, a horror-comedy about a cop who's a werewolf could soon be coming to a multiplex near you.

The Regina filmmakers behind Wolfcop were among five finalists vying for the production-money prize. The contest involved creating a trailer of the movie which was followed by online voting and a final pitch to a panel of judges in Banff.

After learning of the win, writer-director Lowell Dean told CBC News his team is not sure if they'll shoot the film in Saskatchewan, as the province now lacks a film production incentive program.

As part of the contest, the finished film will be shown in major movie theatres in 2014.

"A million-dollar budget is amazing, but to me the real reason to enter this was that theatrical [release]," Dean said. "That's the dream of any Canadian filmmaker."
