6 Regina properties seeking city go-ahead to build laneway suites
Pilot project aims to increase population density, reduce environmental impact of new houses
At least six property owners in Regina are game to take part in the city's laneway housing pilot project.
Today the city's planning commission will discuss applications from property owners hoping to build laneway houses or suites on their lots.
Laneway houses or suites are a secondary structure built separate from the main house on existing properties.
The city had hoped for 20 applications. It received eight, but found only six of them met the criteria.
"Administration heard from several property owners that the eight weeks provided to submit development proposals did not provide sufficient time to prepare the necessary drawings," it said in the report.
The cost of building a laneway suite was also cited as an issue from potential applicants.
One of the goals of the project is to increase density by directing 30 per cent of new population to existing urban areas.
The suites still need final approval by city council on the Sept. 26 meeting before they can be built.
