The Saskatchewan Incident Response Team (SIRT), the province's police oversight agency, announced on Monday that an Estevan police officer had been arrested and charged with assault.

SIRT released a report on the incident Monday. It did not identify the officer.

The arrest comes after SIRT was informed on Nov. 18 of an allegation of interpersonal violence involving an Estevan Police Service officer.

On Nov. 29, the officer in question was arrested by SIRT investigators. They have been with the Estevan police force for two years.

The officer has been charged with assault, uttering threats to cause bodily harm and mischief under $5,000.

They will appear in provincial court on Jan. 20. The case has been referred to the Saskatchewan Attorney General.
