Overnight fire damages main building at beloved golf resort in Candle Lake, Sask.
Resort representative says it will remain open to public
A building at a large golf course north of Prince Albert, Sask., was left with major damages after an overnight fire.
The Candle Lake Fire Department received a call for a fire at 12:40 a.m CST Monday at the Candle Lake Golf Resort.
Fire crews arrived to "flames and heavy smoke."
In a news release, the resort confirmed "significant damage to portions of the Main Building, which housed the restaurant, retail store, coffee shop and administration offices."
Brent Lutz, Candle Lake's chief administrative officer, told CBC News that the building was vacant at the time of the fire.
A nearby hotel and banquet facility was evacuated. There were no reported injuries.
Lutz said members of the Prince Albert Fire Department, the Garden River Department and the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency were called in to provide backup.
Assisting fire departments were released from the scene at around 9 a.m. Lutz said that as of 11 a.m, the fire had been contained to the main building and crews were working to extinguish the fire. The cause has not been determined.
Lynn Flury, director of Globex Management Corporation, which represents Candle Lake Golf Resort, said in a news release that the resort will remain open despite the damages.
"Golfers are invited to visit the resort and support the community during this difficult time. Candle Lake Golf Resort is a pillar of our community. The resort is committed to rebuilding and returning stronger than ever," she said.
