Queen to address Alberta legislature

The Queen will address the Alberta legislature Tuesday as part of her continuing tour to mark the centennials of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The Queen will take the throne at the Alberta legislature Tuesday to make a speech as part of her continuing tour to mark the centennials of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

She will also lift the curtain on a new stained glass window at the legislature and later attend a ceremony at the Provincial Museum.

CBC Newsworld will provide live coverage of the day's events at 12:30 p.m. ET.

On Monday night, heavy rain and strong winds forced the cancellation of large parts of a lavish celebration that had been planned for the Queen.

Half of a three-hour show being held at Edmonton's open-air Commonwealth Stadium had to be cancelled at the last minute as the stage turned into a giant puddle. Most people who had tickets didn't show up leaving the 55,000 seat stadium less than half full.

But the Queen emerged from a limousine in Commonwealth Stadium to cheers from thousands of Albertans who braved wet and cold weather to welcome the royal couple.

Escorted by Mounties on horses, she wore a raincoat and sheltered under a transparent plastic umbrella.

While three guns fired a salute, the Queen reviewed soldiers standing stock-still in the rain.

Military bands wore rain capes and civilians sheltered under raincoats, plastic bags, hats and jackets.

Alberta Premier Ralph Klein stood under an umbrella on the field with 1,500 other Albertans.

Later that night, Klein announced at a dinner for the royals that the busy road between Calgary and Edmonton was being renamed the Queen Elizabeth II Highway.

"It will be the longest highway named after a member of the royal family in Canada. It just shows we don't do things by half measures in Alberta," Klein said.

The royal couple spent much of the holiday weekend at a private retreat in Jasper. On Sunday, they attended religious services at St. Mary and St. George Church in the mountain town.

About 1,000 people had gathered outside the church to see the Queen, who did a walkabout after the service ended and accepted flowers from children.

The Queen's next stop after Edmonton is Calgary before she and the prince return to Britain on Wednesday.
